NORTH CAROLINA STATE MEET

US#4 Cuthbertson Girls Continue Win Streak In North Carolina

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

The highly-ranked Cuthbertson girls displayed their dominance at the North Carolina state championship cross country meet on Nov. 5 at Ivy Redman Park in Kernersville.

Junior Stella Kermes won the Class 4A individual title in 17:40.9 and her Cuthbertson teammates Charlotte Bell and Justine Preisano, also juniors, placed fifth and sixth. Cuthbertson scored 32 points to extend a state meet winning streak that began in 2018 (in Class 3A).

Green Hope won a wide open boys 4A team competition with 124 points to fend off challenges from Charlotte Catholic (166), 2021 champion Mount Tabor (178) and Weddington (178). Zack Gilbertson from Pinecrest won a close race with Caden Townshend of Weddington, 15:28.6 to 15:30.9.

Senior Macy Parks ran 18:58.8 to win the Class 3A girls race and she led North Lincoln to the team championship. The Knights put four in the top 13 and scored 50 points for their third straight championship.

Croatan barely beat North Lincoln, 143 to 149, to earn the 3A boys victory.

Junior Gabriel Schmid of Orange won the 3A race in 15:44.2.

Katherine Hopkins of Lincolnton won the 2A girls race by a minute, running away from the field and finishing in 19:20.0. The N.C. School of Science and Math won the team title with 64 points, led by Anika Raburn's second-place run.

Owen High had a pair of runners finish in the top eight on the way to winning the 2A boys title, 83-91 over Lincoln Charter. Sophomore Jack Anstrom of Seaforth ran 16:15.4 to win the 2A race.

Swain County won the 1A girls team title with 59 points, led by second-place Amaya Hicks and third-place Annie Lewis

Dvdaya Swimmer, a sophomore at Cherokee, won the 1A girls title in 20:08.3.

Sophomore Eli Thompson, who placed 60th, was instrumental for South Stanly as the Rowdy Rebel Bulls won a rare three-way tiebreaker to win the Class 1A boys title. South Stanly, Cherokee and Christ The King all scored 77 points with their first five and Christ The King had three in the top five.

O'Malley Salinas, a freshman from Andrews, won the 1A boys race in 16:46.8.
