On the day before her Chapel Hill boys and girls teams run at the North Carolina state cross country championships in Kernersville, coach Joan Nesbit Mabe joins DyeStat editor Doug Binder to talk about the challenges of leading teams through a season in the middle of the COVID pandemic. Mabe has won a combined five state cross country titles since becoming the head coach at Chapel Hill in 2011. She was a 1980 state mile champion in North Carolina who went on to compete and later coach at UNC. She was a member of the 1996 U.S. Olympic team in the 10,000 meters and won a bronze medal in the 3,000 meters at the World Indoor Championships during her pro career. She competed at five Olympic Trials. She also discusses the obstacles that women face in the coaching profession.
